Every day thousands of passengers pass through Canada’s airports making for an often hectic, and hurried pre-flight check-in experience for most travellers. From the carry-on baggage restrictions to the airport baggage screening procedures, airline passengers face a number of security checkpoint hurdles that can affect the time it takes for them to arrive at their departure gate.

What To Wear

Since all passengers must pass through a walk-through metal detector, we suggest you decrease the likelihood of setting off the alarm:

• Dress comfortably with easy-to-remove outerwear, jackets, belts and slip-on shoes
• Limit jewelry to small earrings, watches, wedding bands/engagement rings, eyeglasses
• Wear clothing without snaps, metal buttons, or studs
• Avoid wearing shoes with metal arches, buckles, steel-toes or shanks
• Avoid wearing belts with metal buckles.
• Remove hidden body piercing's before you fly

Remember, if you set off the alarm while walking through the metal detector you will have to undergo further screening to determine its source. This may include hand “wanding” and/or a physical search.

Flight notification

Register for Air Canada's Flight Notification service to receive delay or cancellation information, or gate change details for your Air Canada or Jazz flight. Notifications can be sent directly to your text-messaging-enabled phone or your email address.

Sign up for Flight Notifications to your mobile device or e-mail!

• Notifications apply only to Air Canada and Jazz flights (domestic, transborder and international).
• You can sign up for a Flight Notification up to 30 days in advance and even add multiple contact points to each notification.
• Notifications are sent:
  • 24 hours prior to departure,
  • 4 hours prior to departure, then,
  • periodically for changes occurring within 4 hours of departure.
• Notifications are sent only if there is a delay of 15 minutes or more or if your flight is cancelled.
• Departure notifications cease 15 minutes prior to actual departure.
• Arrival notifications cease when the plane lands.
• No notification is sent if the flight is on time.
• If your flight number changes because of a delay or cancellation, you will need to manually update your original notification request with your new flight details. Notifications are not automatically readjusted for flight changes.
• Gate change notifications are sent only within 2 hours of departure.

WESTJET'S MOBILE CHECK IN

Select your seat from 24 hours up to 60 minutes before you fly and print your boarding pass before you go to the airport with WestJet's Web check in service!

In order to maintain their high level of on-time departures and arrivals, WestJet guests are advised to be through security and at their departure gate 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of their flight. Guests arriving at the gate less than 10 minutes prior to departure risk losing their reserved seat.

American Airlines drops free standby for most passengers

Most American Airlines' passengers will no longer be able to stand by for a different flight on their day of travel without paying a fee. However, the free-standby option will still be in effect for higher-level members of its frequent-flier program, for first- and business-class travellers, for those paying military fares and for some coach passengers, according to a statement from the airline. All passengers will be able to pay a $50 fee for a guaranteed same-day flight change if space is available.
